Being a Bagless SLP {BHSM Part 2}
Hello there! If you're just tuning in, this is Part 2 of my series of posts on Early Intervention to celebrate this year's Better Hearing and Speech Month's theme: Early Intervention Counts.
You can find Part 1 of my series, Why Early Intervention? here! While you're there be sure to enter my GIVEAWAY of Teach Me to Talk: The Therapy Manual!
Now let's get down to business. I know what you're thinking- An EI therapist that doesn't have a toy bag? What does she do? I don't know when EI therapists became known for bringing a bag of toys into therapy, but it is still a common practice. In fact, in my very first visit to my first client's house, I walk in and the mom says, "Oh, you don't have any toys?" I looked around the room and politely said, "It looks like your child has plenty of toys to play with here!" and grabbed a toy and started playing.
After that session, I began to explain why I didn't have a toy bag during my initial visit. To me, it makes perfect sense why I wouldn't bring in any toys: I am with a child for one hour. 1 hour out of the 168 hours in a week. Sure my toy would be new and exciting for a child, but what happens when I leave? The parents are left without the toy I brought in and no idea how to carry over what we did in our session throughout the rest of the week. By using the toys already present in the child's environment, I can show the parent or caregiver the best way to play with the toy with their child, give them examples of language to model, and give suggestions for more practice once I leave.
But don't limit yourself to toys! To begin with, some of our houses might not have toys available to use. Here's where you can let your creative juices flow. Head outside and pick some dandelions, dig in dirt for worms, play hopscotch, climb on the jungle gym. Stay inside and use the couch cushions and a blanket to build a fort, search through the cabinets and make drums out of pots and a spoon, help with a load of laundry or the sink full of dishes, eat a snack or help cook lunch, get out the shaving cream and get messy.
The possibilities are literally endless, you just have to be open to take a chance. Sure, you might fail. I would be lying if I said every one of my sessions went perfectly. However, I can honestly say that my kids are learning. Not just when I'm there, but when I'm gone. By incorporating our unique skill set and knowledge into a child's daily routine with things present in their natural environment, we are equipping them with the tools for success.
Since I just started venturing into the EI world last fall, it was easy for me to go bagless; I just didn't bring one to my first sessions and I haven't regretted my decision since. But what if you've been doing EI for 10 years and have brought toys into every session? I'm not saying to completely abandon the toys, unless you are up for the challenge! Start small. Choose one client that you feel comfortable with and whose parents are on board for the change. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be keeping the toy bag in the car for all of your sessions.
Now I don't want to fool you and say that I never bring toys into a child's home. There are certain circumstances when you need to bring something in. You might be working on feeding and bring in a puppet to play with. Or maybe the kid isn't interested in anything, so you decide to bring in a bottle of bubbles, because every kid loves bubbles, right? Or there's a goal on the IFSP that you know you can meet if you could only bring in this one toy. So bring it in, play with it, and show the parents the success their child is having. The last 15 minutes of the session, put your toy away and help the parents determine how they can work on something similar with what they have in their home. Make sure that they are able to have success with their own items before you leave. The next session, you might not have to bring that toy back in.
I hope that if you are an Early Intervention SLP, you will consider ditching the bag for one session and seeing how it goes. You might decide that you hate it. At least you tried! Or, you might decide that you like not having to lug that heavy bag around. (Your shoulder might thank you as well!)
My friend over at Sublime Speech recently did a 3 part series about being a "Bagless SLP", so be sure to check out her posts as well! You can view a great parent testimonial video on their thoughts of the toy bag there too.
Have you tried going bagless? What has been your biggest challenge or your best moment? I'd love to hear!

Why Early Intervention? {BHSM Part 1}
Welcome to part one of my mini series on Better Hearing and Speech Month: Early Intervention! Like I said last week, this year's theme is Early Intervention Counts. The sooner therapy is started, the better the outcomes. So, why does it take as long as two years before a speech and/or language impairment is not only detected but acted on?
The simple answer- awareness! 45% of speech-language pathologists and audiologists believe that lack of awareness is the leading barrier to early detection. 57% of parents don't realize that without early detection, treatment takes longer and is more expensive. And as many as 64% of parents are unaware of the early signs to a speech and language disorder.
Check out the info-graphic below to see how early intervention is transformative, efficient, necessary, and accessible.
So what can we do? Spread the word! Help parents identify the signs of early speech and language disorders. Below are a few common signs of speech and language disorders. Find more at Identify the Signs.
- Doesn't smile or interact with others (birth +)
- Doesn't babble (4-7 months)
- Makes only a few sounds or gestures (7-12 months)
- Says only a few words (12-18 months)
- Words are not easily understood (18 months-2 years)
- Doesn't put words together to make sentences (2-3 years)
- Produces speech that is unclear, even to familiar people (2-3 years)
- Repeats first sounds of words or stretches sounds out in words (2.5-3 years)
- Uses a hoarse, breathy, or nasal-sounding voice
In honor of Better Hearing and Speech Month and their theme of Early Intervention Counts, I'm giving away a copy of Laura Mize's Teach Me to Talk: Therapy Manual. This manual provides info on WHY we do what we do in early intervention, as well as outlines therapy goals with many examples on how to target the goals in your sessions. A $54 value! The contest will be open until May 31st. A winner will be announced on June 1st!

Everyday Speech Social Skills Video {Review & Giveaway}
When working on social skills, it's helpful to have a peer model to aid in teaching the skill. With such busy schedules, it can be hard to bring in someone to your session to serve as a model. That's why I love video modeling! But it's often hard to find videos to exactly fit my needs. Everyday Speech has the solution- and it's a great one!
Everyday Speech is best known for their iPad app, Let's be Social. When they added videos to the app, they got such an overwhelming response that they decided to make even more. They hope to have 40 videos by the time they launch-40! The videos can be purchased as standalone videos, video bundles, or you can subscribe to their website to get access to their whole library.
You will be able to watch the videos from any computer or tablet. You can even download the files to watch them offline! To watch on your iPad, you can download the VHX app here.

So what do I think of it? These video rock. I mean seriously, where else can you get videos specifically designed for the topic you need to teach that goes into the depth and detail that these videos do. Each video is right around 2 minutes long. They use real kids and adolescents in their videos in situations that our kids will really encounter. The videos not only show what to do and what not to do, they pause to explain what is happening and to give additional information.
Videos start out by explaining the skill that the video is targeting.
Emotions are identified and explained as they relate to each social situation.
Teachable moments are pinpointed and enhanced.
Thought bubbles are used throughout to show what each person is really thinking.

Most scenarios are suitable for ages 8-9, but can be used as young as age 6. The SLP will need to use his/her own discretion in selecting the appropriate scenarios for your students' ages.
Areas covered by the questions:
1. Recognizing Emotional Reactions
2. Explaining Facial Expressions
3. Making Predictions
4. Making Inferences (re: people, locations, thoughts, feelings, and actions)
5. Multiple Interpretations (of actions and settings)
6. Interpersonal Negotiations
7. Sympathy/Empathy
8. Peer Relatedness (Support)
9. Interpreting Ambiguous Situations
10. Problem Solving
11. Determining Solutions
12. Determining Causes
13. Determining Perspectives
14. Social Judgment
15. Safety Rules
In addition to questions that cover the topics listed above, some scenarios also contain short stories with additional questions that focus on auditory memory, processing, and comprehension. That's an average of 10-20 questions per picture!
So why do I love it?
- It is so versatile! Like I said above, this product would work wonderful for students with Autism who need extra help in social situations and figuring out emotions. But that's not all- the questions also lend themselves to inferencing and problem solving skills. The extra questions provided through the short stories target vocabulary, higher level reasoning, and comprehension.
- Your students get the opportunity to answer every kind of WH- question in almost every question set.
- The hierarchy from explicit to more abstract situations provides a nice progression for my students. They were able to get the hang of the skills in the simpler scenarios before moving on and building onto their skill set in the later pictures.
- The photos strike up quality conversation. With these photos and questions, it is easy to spend two or more sessions on just one picture, especially with the more abstract scenarios.
- I can use it with my middle school students- what's not to love about more materials for that population!?

Back to School Blog Hop- What to do When You're New!
Welcome to the Back to School SLP Blog Hop!
I'm so happy you are here! You will get the chance to collect great back to school ideas for SLPs, win prizes, and get freebies by touring 17 wonderful blogs!
Use the Linkytools at the bottom of this post to hop around the 17 blogs, collect ideas, and most importantly, the clues!
Now for my post... (and hang in there, it's a long one!)
Help!! What to do When You're New!
I just graduated with my Master's Degree this May (yay!!). So like many of you, I'm starting my CFY this fall in a school district. You're in my same shoes- you're so happy to finally be done with school, but slightly terrified at this new and exciting adventure you are about to begin.
Am I really the only SLP in my building? In my town? In my district?
Am I really the only SLP in my building? In my town? In my district?
While these questions can by scary- and possibly true for you!- just take a big deep breath and relax. You've made it this far. You CAN do it. Sure, it's going to be tough. But you made it through that horrible Neuro class, suffered through having clients in the clinic in addition to your schoolwork (not to mention your actual life), and managed to pry your eyes open long enough to make it through that Thursday night class after a full day of school and clinicals. Trust me, I've been there. And guess what, I'm surviving! (See, there is hope!)
Now that you know you're going to make it, sit back and take in some tips and hints from me as I explore entering the beginning of a CFY year.
First, you have to get ORGANIZED! My school didn't have an SLP last year. So, all the materials were thrown aimlessly on the shelves. Student files were everywhere. My little broom closet was a mess!
My OCD just can't handle all of this- not to mention its not ethical to just leave student files all over the place!!
So I spent almost a week at school this summer just organizing all my stuff. Yes, you read that right. I spent a week on organization! Why? Well for one thing, if you're new, you really need to know what you have to work with. I cleaned out every shelf, opened every binder, and looked at what materials were there. That way, when I get my teeny tiny budget from the school district, I know what materials I don't need and what materials I do.
For the open shelving unit, I organized all of the games by topic- Artic, Game pieces, Grammar, Books, Board Games, and Language Games. I took a label and slapped it on the shelf underneath where that section starts, that way, when I use a game I know exactly where to put it back. (As a side note, I really wanted to put the games in the closed cabinet and use this cabinet for my binders so the kiddos aren't occupied with looking at the games. But, the shelves were screwed in place so I could move them. I plan on getting fabric to cover the shelves so no one gets distracted!)
Now I know all of you have found some wonderful Teachers Pay Teachers activities. But how do you organize them? I've tried a couple different ways and most recently changed to this method. First, I laminate and cut out all the cards and extra sheets and put them in a gallon sized ziploc baggie. That way, I can still see the title of the activity, and all the cards and worksheets are in the same place (and can't get out thanks to the handy dandy zipper!).
I'm storing these baggies in hanging files in a milk crate I got from Wal-Mart, but I know you can get them basically anywhere. Mine is going next to my filing cabinet under the table. They are organized in there by topic. I don't have enough seasonal activities to do mine that way, but I might change it up once I get some more! The milk crate on top of the table is going to house my students' working files, where I will keep their IEP goals, attendance sheets, and data sheets (which I plan on having my students help with). The filing cabinet houses old student files, current files, and loose worksheets. If you get nothing else from this post, for your own sanity, please organize your materials!
I don't know anyone! Not even the principal can remember my name...
Starting at a new school can be terrifying. You're the fresh face. Do you really know what you're doing? Can you be trusted to make important decisions? YES YES YES! You DO know what you're doing! You've just spent the last 6 years of your life dedicated to furthering your education and learning in depth information about our field. You can do this. Now you just have to prove to everyone else you can.
My biggest advice here is introduce yourself to everyone you meet. It will be harder for you to remember everyone's names, you do, after all, have a lot more names to remember than everyone else! But really try to make an effort. Come up with a mnemonic device you can use, use associations, anything that will help you remember! Not only will your fellow teachers be impressed you remembered their names, you will feel more comfortable talking to someone if you actually know who they are.
Make good friends with your principal, office staff, computer guys, and janitors. These people will be able to get you basically anything you need. Make yourself known to them, tell them thank you for what they do. Spend some time getting to know them. You'll be surprised what you can learn from them. And who knows, making friends with them might get you something you want in the future (like maybe an IPAD or a larger classroom!).
I have 50 students on my caseload and don't know a single one of them...
It can be overwhelming taking over someone else's caseload. You don't know any of the kids. You don't know what motivates them, what makes them tick, their likes and dislikes, or even if their goals are appropriate for them. You'll spend a lot of time with your nose buried in various IEPs, so make it worth your while. Start making lists of who have similar goals, when IEPs are due and when their annual reviews are. It may seem like a lot of work, but it will help you in the long run, trust me.
My favorite way to get to know someone is to play a fun game. My freebie for the hop is on initiating conversation, and I think it would work perfectly for the first day of school!
It includes 36 different topic cards. Your students must use the words on the topic card to form a question. I've included a hints page if your students need help with this. And if you like the freebie, check out the full version here.
A few other things I like to do on my first day with students:
- Go over IEP goals with your students. It is so empowering for your students to know what their IEP goals are and why they are working on these goals.
- Make goals for the speech room. Does your student want to master that tricky sound, use the correct pronoun, graduate from speech?! If your students are working towards a goal, they are more likely to work harder during your sessions.
- Have fun! Remember, these kids are young, and they are only going to be young once. Try to have a little fun with your students, they will appreciate it, and you will too!

But that's not all! Use this as a grammar activity as well- After you read the word list to your students, ask them which word was the noun, verb, adjective, etc. The possibilities are endless!
Sentence Cards: The sentences gradually get longer as you go through the cards. Read the sentence aloud to your student and have them repeat the sentence after you.
Wh- Question Cards: Read the short story aloud to your student and have them answer the questions at the end of the story.
I've also included a game board to use with the cards, including 6 special cards.
Get the download here! As always, if you download, please leave me some feedback. And enter the Rafflecopter below! One lucky winner will get their own copy of "Listening Detectives."
