<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Hello! Welcome to Part 3 of my Early Intervention series in honor of Better Hearing and Speech Month. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Part 2, Being a Bagless SLP, can be found <a href="http://speechwithsharon.blogspot.com/2015/05/being-bagless-slp-bhsm-part-2.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjchgyaCpONH0-YNFK3i_0QCXOnEH_nd9rD6eViZY1uPor0f5vsvYroSMhgNzKf8LxmjLRoEmDLxxIdRdkU6rUnxEkM0omRNSY157JPjYFdeChnCLO4le2Cg2cWDezHB63zIh5t0yJYbyU/s1600/why+we+play.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjchgyaCpONH0-YNFK3i_0QCXOnEH_nd9rD6eViZY1uPor0f5vsvYroSMhgNzKf8LxmjLRoEmDLxxIdRdkU6rUnxEkM0omRNSY157JPjYFdeChnCLO4le2Cg2cWDezHB63zIh5t0yJYbyU/s320/why+we+play.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Play. When you think of the word <i>play</i>, what do you imagine? Do you see kids running around the park? Maybe you see them blowing bubbles in the backyard, or kicking a ball back and forth. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The Oxford Dictionary defines play as follows: "To engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose." The first part of that definition makes sense, right? When we play, we are doing the activity for fun. We aren't forced to do it, we <i>want</i> to do it because we enjoy it. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It's the second part of that definition that I have problems with- "<b>rather than</b> a <u>serious</u> or <u>practical</u> purpose." You see, as an Early Intervention therapist, play is both serious and practical. Not serious in the sense of stern and uptight, but rather in the sense of importance. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Children not only have <i>fun</i> during play, but they <b>learn</b> during play. You aren't going to find many 2 or 3 year-olds that will sit at a table and work on flashcards or a worksheet. You will, however, find 2 and 3 year-olds engaging in play. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Using a child's natural instincts to play, we can target all of our speech and language goals. From establishing eye contact, to joint attention, to that first word, there is no better way to learn than through actively participating. Children are also more likely to learn when they are doing something that they enjoy. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Don't limit play to just the birth-three population, though. Children continue to play, and continue to learn, through their school age years. Work on past tense verbs by acting out a story that happened yesterday, practice organization and narrative skills while the ninja turtles are battling the bad guy, work on those s-blends while slithering your snakes around the speech room. The only thing holding us back is our own imaginations. Our kids already possess the tools to learn through play, so let's let them learn.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">How do you target skills through play? What else would you like to know about learning through play?</span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Hello there! If you're just tuning in, this is Part 2 of my series of posts on Early Intervention to celebrate this year's Better Hearing and Speech Month's theme: Early Intervention Counts. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br />
You can find Part 1 of my series, Why Early Intervention? <a href="http://speechwithsharon.blogspot.com/2015/05/why-early-intervention-bhsm-part-1.html" target="_blank">here</a>! While you're there be sure to enter my <b style="background-color: white;">GIVEAWAY</b> of <b>Teach Me to Talk: The Therapy Manual</b>! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br />
Now let's get down to business. I know what you're thinking- <i>An EI therapist that doesn't have a toy bag? What does she do? </i>I don't know when EI therapists became known for bringing a bag of toys into therapy, but it is still a common practice. In fact, in my very first visit to my first client's house, I walk in and the mom says, "Oh, you don't have any toys?" I looked around the room and politely said, "It looks like your child has plenty of toys to play with here!" and grabbed a toy and started playing. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">After that session, I began to explain why I didn't have a toy bag during my initial visit. To me, it makes perfect sense why I wouldn't bring in any toys: I am with a child for one hour. <b>1 hour</b> out of the <b>168 hours</b> in a week. Sure my toy would be new and exciting for a child, but what happens when I leave? The parents are left without the toy I brought in and no idea how to carry over what we did in our session throughout the rest of the week. By using the toys already present in the child's environment, I can show the parent or caregiver the best way to play with the toy with their child, give them examples of language to model, and give suggestions for more practice once I leave. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">But don't limit yourself to toys! To begin with, some of our houses might not have toys available to use. Here's where you can let your creative juices flow. Head outside and pick some dandelions, dig in dirt for worms, play hopscotch, climb on the jungle gym. Stay inside and use the couch cushions and a blanket to build a fort, search through the cabinets and make drums out of pots and a spoon, help with a load of laundry or the sink full of dishes, eat a snack or help cook lunch, get out the shaving cream and get messy. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The possibilities are literally endless, you just have to be open to take a chance. Sure, you might fail. I would be lying if I said every one of my sessions went perfectly. However, I can honestly say that my kids are learning. Not just when I'm there, but when I'm gone. By incorporating our unique skill set and knowledge into a child's daily routine with things present in their natural environment, we are equipping them with the tools for success. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Since I just started venturing into the EI world last fall, it was easy for me to go bagless; I just didn't bring one to my first sessions and I haven't regretted my decision since. But what if you've been doing EI for 10 years and have brought toys into every session? I'm not saying to completely abandon the toys, unless you are up for the challenge! Start small. Choose one client that you feel comfortable with and whose parents are on board for the change. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be keeping the toy bag in the car for all of your sessions. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Now I don't want to fool you and say that I never bring toys into a child's home. There are certain circumstances when you <i>need</i> to bring something in. You might be working on feeding and bring in a puppet to play with. Or maybe the kid isn't interested in anything, so you decide to bring in a bottle of bubbles, because <u>every</u> kid loves bubbles, right? Or there's a goal on the IFSP that you know you can meet if you could only bring in this one toy. So bring it in, play with it, and show the parents the success their child is having. The last 15 minutes of the session, put your toy away and help the parents </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">determine how they can work on something similar with what they have in their home. Make sure that they are able to have success with their own items before you leave. The next session, you might not have to bring that toy back in. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I hope that if you are an Early Intervention SLP, you will consider ditching the bag for one session and seeing how it goes. You might decide that you hate it. At least you tried! Or, you might decide that you like not having to lug that heavy bag around. (Your shoulder might thank you as well!)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">
<br />
My friend over at <a href="http://sublimespeech.com/2015/03/bagless-slp-part-1.html" target="_blank">Sublime Speech recently did a 3 part series about being a "Bagless SLP"</a>, so be sure to check out her posts as well! You can view a great parent testimonial video on their thoughts of the toy bag there too. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Have you tried going bagless? What has been your biggest challenge or your best moment? I'd love to hear! </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Welcome to part one of my mini series on Better Hearing and Speech Month: Early Intervention! Like I said last week, this year's theme is Early Intervention Counts. The sooner therapy is started, the better the outcomes. So, why does it take as long as two years before a speech and/or language impairment is not only detected but acted on?</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The simple answer- <i>awareness!</i> <b>45%</b> of speech-language pathologists and audiologists believe that lack of awareness is the leading barrier to early detection. <b>57%</b> of parents don't realize that without early detection, treatment takes longer and is more expensive. And as many as <b>64% </b>of parents are unaware of the early signs to a speech and language disorder. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br />

With such busy schedules, it can be hard to bring in someone to your session to serve as a model. That's why I <i>love</i> video modeling! But it's often hard to find videos to exactly fit my needs. Everyday Speech has the solution- and it's a great one! </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So what do I think of it? These video <b>rock</b>. I mean seriously, where else can you get videos specifically designed for the topic you need to teach that goes into the depth and detail that these videos do. Each video is right around 2 minutes long. They use <i>real</i> kids and adolescents in their videos in situations that our kids will <i>really</i> encounter. The videos not only show what to do and what not to do, they pause to explain what is happening and to give additional information. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Now to reveal my fib! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><b>My entire county goes to one high school. Fact</b></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I live in Jasper County, Illinois, a large county in the southern central region of Illinois. According to the 2010 Census, Jasper County covers 494.51 square miles and </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">is home to a total of 9,698 people, which breaks down to less than 20 people per square mile. We have one private Catholic school that goes up to 8th grade. In the public school system, we have one grade school, one middle school (which is now housed in our high school) and one high school. I had 140 people in my graduating class. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span><span style="line-height: 18px;"><b>At one point or another in my childhood I had these animals as pets: cat, turtle, dog, and fish. Fact</b></span><br style="line-height: 18px;" /><br /><span style="line-height: 18px;">My parents have had cats and dogs since my brother and I were little. One day, my brother and I found a turtle down by the creek near our house. We convinced our mom to let us keep it! We fed and took care of it for over a year. One morning, my mom woke up to the turtle crawling across the living room floor. Needless to say, from that day forward, we no longer had a turtle as a pet. Mom and dad did agree to let us get some fish as a replacement. Now my parents have a cat, while my husband and I have a dog. </span><br /><br /><span style="line-height: 18px;"><b>I am very musical and can play the clarinet, piano, and trumpet. Fib</b></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><b><br /></b></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">I do consider myself a musical person. I have been in my school's band and chorus since I was in elementary school. I was an active member of my high school's marching and concert bands, as well as musicals and choir concerts. So which musical instrument do I know how to play? The clarinet! I didn't really have much of a choice when I started band in elementary school. My cousin had a clarinet that she gave to me to use, so it was either play that or play nothing. Good thing I was good at playing the clarinet! I did dabble around with my brother's trumpet, but I could never get it to sound quite right. Since I can read music, I am also able to punch out notes on a piano. However, I am far from saying that I can actually <i>play</i> the piano. Maybe one day!</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Did you make the right guess? If you guessed C, congratulations! </span></span>This Schackmann Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14244806266013108661noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956136244540798158.post-45897815178814432382015-03-31T22:00:00.000-05:002015-04-01T07:17:02.060-05:002 Facts and a Fib<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Here are my two facts and a fib. Can you spot the fib?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">A) My entire county goes to one high school. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">B) At one point or another in my childhood I had these animals as pets: cat, turtle, dog, and fish. </span><br />

That's why I love <a href="http://www.speechpathology.com/slp-ceus/">SpeechPathology.com</a>. For only $99, you get access to as many different CEUs as you want for a year! It doesn't get much easier than that. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnL-7g0IulyghAtZ0VJU6zyrp7ap-vsPGXVT6eYzqmO9Xu1-cGi-wL_Z0QFSv29l3AdbMDeQ703_wM4y1feY25wnMQ_aInExEvg2QvyqEEM59gZzgjeNxenlIQU5r8syt5Q-rOmCjNCVk/s1600/sp.com.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnL-7g0IulyghAtZ0VJU6zyrp7ap-vsPGXVT6eYzqmO9Xu1-cGi-wL_Z0QFSv29l3AdbMDeQ703_wM4y1feY25wnMQ_aInExEvg2QvyqEEM59gZzgjeNxenlIQU5r8syt5Q-rOmCjNCVk/s1600/sp.com.png" height="175" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">SpeechPathology.com isn't just for the school SLP either. They have CEUs on early intervention, swallowing, aphasia, stuttering, ethics, autism, cochlear implants, and multicultural issues, to name just a few. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The site also offers the courses in many different contexts, including live webinars, video courses, text courses, and audio courses. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">And if you plan it right, you can use the one year membership to count towards two CEU cycles for ASHA. How? Just register for the site during June or July of the last year of your three year cycle with ASHA. That way, you can use the CEUs for the last five or six months of your current cycle, as well as the first five or six months during your next cycle. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Now you know why I love SpeechPathology.com. So, all you frenzied SLPs, what do you love?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with SpeechPathology.com and earn no benefits from directing you to their site.</span> </span>This Schackmann Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14244806266013108661noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956136244540798158.post-83040949406897192562015-01-23T15:44:00.001-06:002015-01-23T15:44:28.508-06:00Moments of Clarity<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">We've all had those days. You know, the ones where we wonder why we ever thought it was a good idea to become a Speech-Language Pathologist. You are overwhelmed with paperwork while still trying to find time to perform effective therapy. Your private-practice client just cancelled his session. Again. A teacher/principal/parent questions your therapy approach. You find out about an IEP meeting for one of your students the day it is due, 5 minutes before the meeting starts. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It's no secret our job is stressful. (Well maybe it is to our administrators or insurance companies- who seem to think we can handle adding bus duty and lunch supervision into our schedule or who deny every claim we submit and force us to somehow think of a clever way to get our claims accepted, all in our spare time.) Burn-out rate in our profession is high, and I don't know about you, but I don't want to be scouring the internet for "jobs for any other profession but speech pathology". </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So how do I stay motivated to keep doing what I do every day? Focusing on moments of clarity. Moments where I am reminded why I wanted to become an SLP in college. Moments where I realize that I am making a difference. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I was having a rough day in therapy this week. Two clients cancelled on me the day of their session. One session was spent more on managing behavior than performing therapy. I didn't have time to eat lunch that day. My last therapy session of the day, however, was awesome! My client was requesting to play with many different activities, maintaining eye contact during communication, and was making contextually correct comments (a big one for this little guy with Autism). </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">When I got home from work that night, I found a Facebook status from my client's mother. Her words reminded me why I love being an SLP and reassured me that I made the correct career path. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">My boss loved the comment as well, she even posted it to the business Facebook page! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYMrDhS_CSBebNC4CduARsSItjOyQbGEr3d_fbuAMbTKdhEHf6s6aMNW-TMmuAFdlNA6RA2WuDWweZbNXqs9ix8qMUHr1jm-s7WbJIaMF5lXpnUTLZeM9P0eVOabGFQrXvu8KXh5l1HnA/s1600/clarity.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYMrDhS_CSBebNC4CduARsSItjOyQbGEr3d_fbuAMbTKdhEHf6s6aMNW-TMmuAFdlNA6RA2WuDWweZbNXqs9ix8qMUHr1jm-s7WbJIaMF5lXpnUTLZeM9P0eVOabGFQrXvu8KXh5l1HnA/s1600/clarity.png" height="122" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So when you are feeling down and wondering why you ever wanted to be an SLP, find that moment of clarity. Once you find it-whether it is a card from a client, a few nice words said at a meeting, or even a client's mom's Facebook status- write it down, take a picture, hang it up. Do <b>something</b> with it. Display it where you can constantly be reminded of why you <b>rock</b> at your job.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Because you <i>do</i> rock. You are an SLP after all. :) </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYihAOBf97OHHqZ3IyElkSi3Yt-gh_nJ1x6C-7U5BGZet2GlFhIrlv0MoEQQYr06l3fTmJpXL5z-ITNmd63RGODJKHIFdy7saWTMQCVBXIT5ILo9KOGwUN8tF_ze6BZeShIaN-wCWO4mo/s1600/frenzy+intro.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYihAOBf97OHHqZ3IyElkSi3Yt-gh_nJ1x6C-7U5BGZet2GlFhIrlv0MoEQQYr06l3fTmJpXL5z-ITNmd63RGODJKHIFdy7saWTMQCVBXIT5ILo9KOGwUN8tF_ze6BZeShIaN-wCWO4mo/s1600/frenzy+intro.jpg" height="400" width="315" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">First, a little more about myself:</span><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I'm a born and raised Southern Illinois girl. I love wide-open spaces, hometown pride, and having everyone know my name.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">My husband and I <b>love</b> wine. We have an annual wine trail weekend with our friends where we like to stock up on some favorites to bring home with us. Unfortunately, they don't last long in our house! Good thing the wineries aren't that far away ;)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">On December 16, I became the mom to my perfect little boy, Ian. While 16 weeks pregnant with him, his heart stopped beating. I was able to give birth to him and hold him in my arms-memories I will cherish forever.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">While I do love wearing dresses and getting dolled up, I am a true tomboy at heart. I own my own shotgun and bow, and shoot them often in the field by our house. One of my favorite things to do in the spring is search the woods for mushrooms. On a summer night, you can find my husband and I fishing in our pond. Don't worry, I still make my husband take the fish off the hook, that's gross after all!</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Now on to the reason you're here, you're a frenzied SLP! </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Each month we will bring you a little something to help make your frenzied life as an SLP a little easier. This month, I've got a little cleaning tip for you!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I don't know about you, but my house always seems to be a M.E.S.S. My husband and I just moved in last month, and I never knew how quickly a perfectly put together house could turn into a mess. Dishes are stacked up in the sink. Laundry is overflowing from the basket. Blankets and pillows are all over the living room floor. Mail is stacked up on the one empty corner of my desk. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">And I know I'm not alone here when I say I don't like spending an entire Saturday cleaning my house. There's got to be an easier way, right? Right!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I've got a weekly cleaning schedule that will keep your house clean in less than 30 minutes a day. The trick? Pick a room to tackle each day. Breaking up the cleaning into small, manageable tasks will help you get things accomplished without feeling overwhelmed. And that's the goal after all, right?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I'll start with the full test. You can pick to test all options, which include initial, medial, and final sounds, initial blends, vowels, r sounds, and a speech sample. Or, you can pick and choose what you would like to test. After you hit the "Next" button, you will be asked to add in the name and birthday of the student you are testing. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">If you do the complete full test, you get 59 real-life picture cards. What makes this app so unique (and totally awesome!) are the interactive sound tiles. You can see below that the "a" and "pp" are green. That means that those are the sounds being tested on that card. The actual sound that corresponds to the spelling of the word is printed below the green tile. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyVkAhuVBE3VA5R3XygCOSD2S8CaVyIVOBZGykngeQcY123LOO3bpVW0b1sogzOD3M8oqtxtQRwSd0kxto6Oxsxxp0rmt6yU42-Xgzq2eSuAw2DXZ5hPOxUeBrimC2Zup0T6JK_GC2IIc/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyVkAhuVBE3VA5R3XygCOSD2S8CaVyIVOBZGykngeQcY123LOO3bpVW0b1sogzOD3M8oqtxtQRwSd0kxto6Oxsxxp0rmt6yU42-Xgzq2eSuAw2DXZ5hPOxUeBrimC2Zup0T6JK_GC2IIc/s1600/3.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">If you have your speech room set up like mine, you are often sitting across from the student you are testing. A fabulous feature of this app is the ability to flip the picture upside down so that it is facing a student sitting across from you. How cool is that!? I also like that you are able to record the student's production of the word and play it back.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQGn1VrKfJyM7Pq_j30KTfnHeX84erGizXFdfcqnS598BB4WRx_5Atvxg9YM7DHitiDrKO7mQEyZkWp20rFTvGGaEEX-TNO77IkU5ahIRkvOOyy4PWck58K86kmf10RFtGokR3CJx2B5c/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQGn1VrKfJyM7Pq_j30KTfnHeX84erGizXFdfcqnS598BB4WRx_5Atvxg9YM7DHitiDrKO7mQEyZkWp20rFTvGGaEEX-TNO77IkU5ahIRkvOOyy4PWck58K86kmf10RFtGokR3CJx2B5c/s1600/4.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Now, lets look at the awesome scoring capabilities. Let's say that the student says "abble" instead of "apple". If you click on the "pp" once, it turns red, indicating that the sound was incorrect. If you tap the sound tile again, it becomes yellow, indicating that the sound was an approximation of the target sound. If you mess up, just tap the tile again and it turns back to green. If the sound was deleted, just slide the tile towards the top of the screen and the tile disappears, indicating a deletion. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Back to my example: After you click that the sound was wrong, click on the arrow to the right of the word and a drop down menu like the one below appears. For my example, the student substituted a /b/ for the /p/ sound. Click and drag the "b" tile up to the "pp" tile and the tile will change to a red "b". </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGAm_MeOiS3HANY7P3ZAIH5FtNlRGW4bRsRtAjqBWvBzQ3B4ORtTKoFtB0n-IpM9EreyAt4rJeyXXeGNFpqzwxjHHMnU6naVD1mq7LFt4CP33eIVEaBJ8pjfbh3lBCvNmWJJTAlMJeT-c/s1600/5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGAm_MeOiS3HANY7P3ZAIH5FtNlRGW4bRsRtAjqBWvBzQ3B4ORtTKoFtB0n-IpM9EreyAt4rJeyXXeGNFpqzwxjHHMnU6naVD1mq7LFt4CP33eIVEaBJ8pjfbh3lBCvNmWJJTAlMJeT-c/s1600/5.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">What makes this feature even better is that you can add phonological processes to the tile as well. You have three choices of pages: </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Substitution: backing, fronting, stopping, gliding, deaffrication, affrication, labialization, vowelization, alveolarization, depalatalization </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Assimilation: assimilation, denasalization, coalescence, voicing, devoicing, reduplication</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Syllable Structure: initial consonant deletion, final consonant deletion, weak syllable deletion, cluster reduction, epenthesis</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">If you aren't sure what a process means, simply click on the process and a definition and example are given. To choose the process, drag and place the process on the corresponding tile. </span></div>
<br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">What I love most about this app is the ability to record a speech sample after you have completed the test. There are three interactive scenes to choose from: a mountain scene, beach scene, or park scene. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Once you choose a scene picture, the full scene will appear. Be sure to hit the "Record" button so that your student's speech sample is recorded for future analysis! You have the ability to swipe left and right to view more of the scene. Pictures in the scene contain key sounds that are present in the test. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The app also provides a written report. The report includes the sounds marked in error in each position that the student should have by his/her age, as well as ones that are considered developmentally appropriate based on age. Phonological processes are also reported in this manner. Recommendations are included for target sounds in therapy, as well as sounds that should be monitored as the student ages. You can also type in your own conclusions and recommendations. If you want, you have the option to print the report or email the report to yourself or a parent. </span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So, after showing you how the app works, I should probably tell you what I think about it!</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">What I like:</span></span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">I love, love, love the interactive sound tiles and how easy it is to indicate an incorrect sound, replace it with the sound the student used, and indicate the phonological process used. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Now I know what you're all thinking, <i>I barely have time to give a test, let alone score it <u>while</u> I'm giving it </i>or <i>The two-year-old I'm testing won't sit still while I mark all of his errors and determine what processes he is using. </i>Guess what- you're in luck! The developers of this app have allowed you to go back at a later time and <b>edit</b> the results. This means that you can record the student saying each word on the slide without doing anything with the tiles. Once the test is completed, click the "Edit Results" button in the top right and go back through the test and mark the student's errors at another time. Easy peasy and oh so handy!</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The pictures are pictures of REAL items that are relevant and up-to-date. And since this is an app, if a picture ever becomes outdated or needs changed for any other reason, the developers can change the picture and with a simple app update, you now have the most up-to-date pictures again. A hard copy assessment can't do that. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">If a student can't read or doesn't know what a picture is, simply clicking on the picture will give a verbal prompt. This feature can be turned on and off through the settings menu.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The report function of the app is very convenient. I like how it scores the test for you and gives you the results in table and report form. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 18px;">Like I said above, I think my favorite part of the app (followed closely by the interactive sound tiles) is the speech sample. I used to have to bring in separate pictures to try to elicit a speech sample, and then my students would just name the things or actions in the picture. The interactive picture scenes not only grab my students' attention, but allow for a deeper evaluation of their language skills with the included prompts. I am able to use this speech sample to not only give an intelligibility rating, but analyze a student's MLU, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and articulation skills in conversation. </span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">What features I would like to see:</span></span></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">While I love the speech sample capabilities, I would love to see the ability to give the speech sample in the Screener mode. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">As great as this app is, it is not standardized, so a standardized assessment is still needed to determine eligibility. However, this app would be a perfect way to monitor and track progress! In the future, I would love to see this become a standardized assessment. </span></span></li>
</ul>
</div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Overall, this is an innovative, invaluable app that every SLP should have in their toolbox. It provides an in-depth look at a student's articulation and phonological skills in a format that is easy to use and understand for both professionals and parents. The ability to edit or score the test at a later time fits perfectly into a busy SLP's lifestyle, and the ease at which one can monitor student progress with a look at the screen allows for quick and painless IEP progress monitoring. This is the perfect informal assessment for articulation skills!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; display: inline; line-height: 18px;"><br /></span>

The creative bug (along with some much needed down time this summer) has hit me and I'm back to making products! I can't promise how often I'll be posting them for the rest of the summer due to limited internet access and moving craziness, but I promise there will be new things coming soon. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">My first product since my long hiatus targets phonological awareness with a cute bubblegum theme. In particular, it focuses on rhyming words, both identifying if two words rhyme and producing a rhyming word given a word. I plan on creating a whole series of phonological awareness products around this bubblegum theme, so stay tuned for more!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This product aligns with <span style="background-color: white; color: #202020; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;">CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.A: Recognize and produce rhyming words.</span></span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #202020; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">There are 72 total cards in this product. 36 each for Identifying Rhyming Words and Producing Rhyming Words. </span></span><br />

So here's my newest edition- L and L Blends.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUY9vJQLQGTFeqlLw1vr45ywblxMD3IQ2m9KVKLQ9EozmJeEJwZ6SeypweSkSRz3h6ld528xidaJESYwjzSpaYy-233S24L5OmjuFqawHumPs_IThc8hcENEhMv61hg6n_ugHpOpReTbo/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUY9vJQLQGTFeqlLw1vr45ywblxMD3IQ2m9KVKLQ9EozmJeEJwZ6SeypweSkSRz3h6ld528xidaJESYwjzSpaYy-233S24L5OmjuFqawHumPs_IThc8hcENEhMv61hg6n_ugHpOpReTbo/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Just like before, take a standard Jenga game and color the ends of the blocks with red, orange, yellow, blue, green, and purple. Have your student draw a Jenga block. The color they draw corresponds to the position of the sound. The best part is you can target the word, phrase, or sentence level all on the same card! There are 15 cards per color. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Oh the dreaded "V" word- Vocabulary! I don't know about you, but whenever I see a vocabulary goal, I shiver a little inside. Why? Because they are usually super vague. For example: [Student] will learn grade level vocabulary words with 80% accuracy over 3 sessions, or, [Student] will give definitions for academic vocabulary with 80% accuracy over 3 sessions. First of all, how are these goals even measurable?! And my next question, and the question I'm sure you're all asking as well, what vocabulary words do I target?? </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I recently attended a wonderful conference on teaching vocabulary. Unfortunately, the presenter wasn't able to give us a magic list of words to teach. She did, however, point us in a few different directions. One set of words to consider teaching are called "Bell's 12 Powerful Words". These are words that commonly trip up students when they are taking tests and include trace, infer, formulate, support, summarize, contrast, analyze, evaluate, describe, explain, compare, and predict. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The presenter also recommended teaching academic vocabulary, or the vocabulary your students are using in their classes. You can use the vocabulary that the teachers are using in their classes if you are able to get the words ahead of time. Or you can come up with your own vocabulary from their subjects. There are a few additional resources that provide examples of academic vocabulary- <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Vocabulary-Common-Core-Robert-Marzano/dp/0985890223/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1398988804&sr=1-1&keywords=vocabulary+for+the+common+core" target="_blank">Vocabulary for the Common Core by Marzano and Simms</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Building-Academic-Vocabulary-Teachers-Manual/dp/1416602348/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1398988862&sr=1-1&keywords=building+academic+vocabulary" target="_blank"><i>Building Academic Vocabulary</i> by Marzano and Pickering</a>, and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Reading-Teachers-Book-Lists-Grades/dp/0787982571/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1398988744&sr=1-1&keywords=the+reading+teachers+book+of+lists" target="_blank">The Reading Teacher's Book of Lists by Fry and Kress</a>. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">For our life skills kids or kids with limited vocabulary, we could work on functional vocabulary. These are words that come from the student's environment. Go around the school and find important words, such as caution, flammable, and exit. Bring in words that you find from labels, maps, ads, and recipes. Involve the student and their families when you select the words to make things as functional as possible.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The last type of words the presenter recommended to target were essential vocabulary words. These are words that appear frequently in reading materials, on tests, and during conversations, but aren't learned easily without instruction. These are also considered Tier 2 words. </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">[Side note: Tier 2 words are high frequency words that are useful across a variety of domains. Some questions to ask to help identify Tier 2 words include: Is it useful? Is it an important word for people to know? Does it have instructional potential- can it be worked with and taught a number of ways? Will it help students more precisely discuss and explain general concepts?] Some resources that target essential vocabulary words are <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Vocabulary-Cartoons-Power-Burchers-Paperback/dp/B00BR5LXYE/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1398989879&sr=1-2&keywords=vocabulary+cartoons+burchers%2C+1998" target="_blank">Vocabulary Cartoons</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/AbraVocabra-Amazingly-Sensible-Approach-Vocabulary/dp/1877673323/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1398989927&sr=1-1&keywords=abravocabra" target="_blank">AbraVocabra</a>, and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Absolutely-Essential-Words-Murray-Bromberg/dp/0764147811/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1398990031&sr=1-1&keywords=504+absolutely+essential+words" target="_blank">504 Absolutely Essential Words</a>. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Like I said before, there is no magic list to use to target vocabulary for our students. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't target them though! The presenter recommended picking 10-12 words a month to target. So you have your 10-12 words, but how do you teach them? </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">There are SO many ways to teach vocabulary to our students. Here are a few of my favorites:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Use a guessing game- provide clues and have the student try to guess the meaning. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Personalize it- use the word when talking with a student about himself/herself. They will want to know what it means and they now also have a personal connection to the word, which will help them remember it better. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Go on a treasure hunt- in the dictionary! Give them different things to find in the dictionary- like five adjectives that begin with "a" or ten words that use "pre" as a prefix. Ask them which word doesn't belong out of a set of four and why. Have them explain if they would rather be/do/see ____ or ____ and why. There's endless possibilities here. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Start a vocabulary notebook with all the new vocabulary they are learning.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Use charts and diagrams- like a Venn Diagram or the Frayer Model</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Take a picture of students acting out vocabulary words- the more your students are involved, the more likely they will be to remember!</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Use vocabulary words to make song titles, act out a skit, give a newscast, etc. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Look for vocabulary words in real life materials- magazines, news articles, song lyrics, comic books, etc. </span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">These are just a few of my favorites. What are your favorite ways to teach vocabulary? Spread the wealth, peeps!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">M is for Monkeying around with Vocabulary. I looked and looked and looked to try to find a link for this for you, but it seems that it's out of print! In fact, this copy was left at my school from a previous SLP. So if you run across a copy of either book, be sure to grab it up!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">There are two versions to this product, a grades K-2 version and a grades 3-5 version. They both include sections on antonyms, synonyms, classifying, definitions, absurdities, and then the 3-5 grade version also includes a section on analogies.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">These are so much fun for my littles. Each section includes multiple ways to practice the skill: matching pictures, cut and paste, coloring pages, circling words, fill in the blanks, writing sentences, and word banks. With so many different activities to use, my students don't even realize they are working!</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">L is for Labels! If you don't already know, I'm a bit OCD when it comes to organization. I have ALL of my binders labeled. Each shelf of my cabinets and bookcase are labeled with what type of product is on that shelf. Even my desk drawers are labeled (OK, I admit. That may be taking it too far.) But with so much going on each day, it's important to know where things are at in a moments notice. I definitely couldn't live without my labels!</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Whew it's been a while since I've posted in my ABC series, time to get back to it!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">K is for Kleenex. I know, I know, it's not really speech related. But let's be honest, it's a pretty big asset in your speech room too. I think Spring has finally set in (crossing my fingers!), and all this change in the weather has caused all my kiddos to have the dreaded runny nose. The first sniffle and my kids are directed to the tissue box, followed by my Germ-X bottle. There's no need for me to get sick too!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">What's a K that is a staple in your room? I'd love to hear!</span>This Schackmann Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14244806266013108661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956136244540798158.post-35929043855845712172014-04-07T21:16:00.000-05:002014-04-07T21:16:32.608-05:00What I've been up to...<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">As you might know, I've been rather absent from the blogging/TpT world for a while. I'm so happy that I can finally tell you why- I've got a new job and we are moving!!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">My husband and I are both from the same hometown, which is almost 3 hours from where we live now. When an opportunity arose back in our hometown, I couldn't pass it up. I will be providing Early Intervention therapy, which is what I've really wanted to do since graduate school!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It has been extremely hard saying goodbye to my administration and coworkers, but luckily they all understand why my husband and I are making the move. I'll be finishing out the school year, but starting this summer, I'll officially be an EI interventionist. And I couldn't be more excited :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So now that all the hustle and bustle of applying for jobs and figuring out what is going on with my life is over, I'll be back to blogging and making products for you all! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Are any of you EI therapists? Do you have any tips or tricks for me? I'd love to hear them!</span>This Schackmann Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14244806266013108661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956136244540798158.post-51178397063907233082014-03-18T20:53:00.000-05:002014-03-18T20:53:19.471-05:00March Speachy Feedback Linky PartyI LOVE this time of the month! But that's not all- the questions also lend themselves to inferencing and problem solving skills. The extra questions provided through the short stories target vocabulary, higher level reasoning, and comprehension. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 20px;">Your students get the opportunity to answer every kind of WH- question in almost every question set.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 20px;">The hierarchy from explicit to more abstract situations provides a nice progression for my students. They were able to get the hang of the skills in the simpler scenarios before moving on and building onto their skill set in the later pictures. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 20px;">The photos strike up quality conversation. With these photos and questions, it is easy to spend two or more sessions on just one picture, especially with the more abstract scenarios. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 20px;">I can use it with my middle school students- what's not to love about more materials for that population!?</span></span></li>
